GloZell
I came across a video commenting on Rebecca Black's "Friday" music video by GloZell. For those of you who do not know who GloZell is or have never seen any of her video's, she is a comedian who has posted over 1000 videos and her most popular ones are commentaries on popular music or people. Watch a funny video of her commenting of Kesha's "Tik Tok" here. Recently I saw a link for her newest video about her "Friday" video and in it she points out that Rebecca Black has a token black rapper in her video. Glozell talks about it roughly from about 3:23 to 4:05. Watch it here. Its interesting that even in music videos there are token characters.

Thats true I didnt think of that. She has the token black male rapper in her vid! I think it is a little strange that the company that produced them made sure that that was in her video. Im pretty sure it was their choice not hers
ReplyDeleteThis is very interesting, and I noticed that right away. But when I looked on CNN music section or something like that, I saw that something different was portrayed. It says that the video, "features a rap break from a rapper who appears about 20 years older than everyone else in the video and drops borderline-creepy lines about getting "in the back seat" and wanting to scream when he sees a school bus drive by." This seems almost racist, and not necessarily tokenism to me. I have a problem with any company that thinks that the only person to say some creepy lines should be the black man.
ReplyDeleteI actually feel as if having the token black character be the rapper isn't exactly racial tokenism. I feel as if I constantly see rappers as black people, and I'm wondering if that carries a positive or negative connotation.
